UML’s comeback in Gaurishankar, Dolakha
The CPN-UML, which had slipped to third place in 2079, has restored power by winning the vice-chairman post in the recently concluded by-election. UML’s Uma Lungeli Magar won by securing 2,805 votes.
Historical background of local elections
In 2074 BS, UML had won 6 wards in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality, including the chair and vice-chairman. However, in the 2079 BS elections, UML was only able to win one ward due to party divisions, alliances, and lack of internal unity.
Why did UML become weak?
After the party split in 2078 BS, the alliance between the Congress and the Maoist Center weakened the UML. Due to the alliance, Maoist Biswas Karki was elected president and Congress’ Shyamsundar Tamang was elected vice-chairman.
UML’s strategic success in the by-elections
This time, the parties participated in the elections without any alliance. In a single contest, UML’s Uma Lungeli Magar defeated Maoist Nim Leki Sherpa by a margin of 205 votes.
Lungeli Magar’s political journey
Magar, who joined the UML only after 2074, has made her political activism short but impressive. Local leaders say that her husband Furlakpa Sherpa’s entry into the UML helped her get a ticket.
Business and social work
Lungeli Magar, who is involved in the construction business, was active in social work while living in Kathmandu. She has contributed to the local area by joining sports and club memberships.
Changes brought about by the election in local politics
Winning the post of vice-chairperson in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality is proof of the organizational strength of the UML. It has also redefined the political equation between the Maoists and the Congress in a new way.
Maoist allegations
Maoist Center leader Vishal Khadka alleged that there was an internal agreement between the Congress and the UML. However, UML leader Shyam Basnet called this untrue.
Voter’s message
According to Lungeli Magar, the people voted in their favor due to the weakness of the Maoists in development and construction.
Future course of action and challenges
The opposition has challenged Lungeli Magar over the accusation that she is staying in Kathmandu. However, she has expressed her commitment to stay and work in the village after winning.
UML’s organizational strength
UML leader Basnet said that the activism of UML’s central leaders and the strength of the local structure have taken the party to new heights.
